Physical Assessments among School-Aged Children

The nursing physical assessment is used to gather data about a patient; focuses on functional abilities and responses to illness/stressors. The purposes of physical assessment are to identify nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems monitor the status of an identified problem; screen for health problems; and evaluate nursing care. The physical assessment of young school-ages involves greeting the child directly, request self-undressing, allow underwear, if cooperative, proceed in head to toe matter.

Provide age appropriate toys (paper doll), ask child to count, name colors, talk about favorites, ask the child a few simple questions during the interview, and show child equipment and allow to hold. When it comes to older school-agers, separate the child and family for part of the interview assure child of confidentiality, begin with nonthreatening subjects, respect privacy, expose only area to be examined, allow some choice of sequence of exam, give child the choice of having a parent present for the exam, and discuss findings of the exam with child. School- Age children have a rapidly expanding vocabulary and usually seek approval of parents, teachers, and healthcare providers while adolescents are self-conscious and introspective and may wish to be examined without parents or siblings present, at least during the more personal aspects of the exam(Sarkar, 2018).

At the age of 8 years old, a child learnsby manipulating concrete objects, develop understanding of relationships between things and ideas. He or she is able to make judgements based on reason, lack ability to think abstractly or general overviews.
